About the Laura Culp Project

Wherever You Are At In The Process

Recovery from an eating disorder is a long and often lifelong process that transforms lives in profound ways. We are here to provide continuous support and guidance throughout this journey. Many of our Clients have adult children (aged 18+), which can make it challenging to make medical decisions, access treatment, or advocate for their loved ones’ rights during the recovery process.

Often, these journeys begin with hospital admission due to the severe health complications caused by eating disorders, followed by quick referrals to treatment centers. While treatment centers offer

valuable tools and resources, we understand that the existing healthcare system is not always equipped to fully support individuals and their families. Families are often blindsided by high medical bills, treatment facility costs, and a lack of communication.

If you or someone you know is facing the challenges of caring for a loved one battling a severe eating disorder, The Laura Culp Project is here to provide the understanding, support, and guidance you need. Schedule a consult call today and start your own journey towards healing and transformation.

Our Misson

By empowering parents caring for loved ones battling eating disorders and mental health issues, we can improve treatment outcomes, help families thrive, and save lives.

About Our Mission

The Laura Culp Project is dedicated to working hand-in-hand with families facing the complex challenges of caring for loved ones struggling with eating disorders and other mental health conditions. We serve as a guiding light, helping families navigate through a convoluted healthcare system, including addressing insurance denials and finding suitable care options. Within a safe and empathetic space, caregivers have the opportunity to share their lived experiences with others who have walked the same path. Our primary focus is on those aged 18 and above, individuals who may have reached a point where the healthcare system no longer readily accepts them or where the mental health system fails to provide adequate care. Importantly, we stand firm in our commitment to never turning anyone away.

Our Story

The Laura Culp Project was born from the shared experiences of two dedicated mothers, Joy and Carla, who had both faced the challenges of caring for loved ones battling eating disorders. Their journey began within a peer-to-peer support group on Facebook, a community of over 5500 members across the United States and around the world.

Joy and Carla’s connection within this online space was a pivotal moment. At the time, Joy’s daughter was in recovery, while Carla’s daughter was still in the throes of the disorder. Joy extended her support, guiding Carla through her own story and helping her navigate the complexities of getting her daughter the necessary care.

As administrators and moderators of the Eating Disorder Peer Support (EDPS) group, Joy and Carla are dedicated to maintaining a protective and nurturing environment. Within this space, caregivers

find assistance in troubleshooting care, education about their lovedones’ illnesses, and the comforting assurance of being heard and cared for. Recognizing the need for a more personalized and focused approach, they established a nonprofit organization (NFP) to broaden their impact.

The Laura Culp Project’s history is one of empathy, dedication, and a deep commitment to listening closely to the intricate stories of each family. They offer free access to the knowledge, resources, tools, and invaluable experience they have gathered along their own challenging journeys.

Laura Culp’s Story

Laura Culp has a story much like many of our kids. She was incredible. She was a high achiever, a perfectionist, she excelled in sports and academics. She was compassionate and kind and felt things deeply. She had hopes and dreams for her future. She had a loving family whom she loved back. In her senior year of high school she developed an eating disorder that after 13 years would take her life. Laura’s parents, John and Sandy Culp, were parents much like many of us. They had a daughter whom they loved with their whole hearts. They had hopes and dreams for her future. Her eating disorder wrote a different ending for their family. They have cried the same tears we all have cried. They have wondered how their girl got so sick and how they missed it. They have dropped their daughter off at higher levels of care, turned around and walked away because they knew it was the right thing to do. They have fought the system for insurance coverage and better care. Much like many of our stories, the Culps did everything they knew to do with very little resource and support.

On May 2, 2009 Laura’s heart stopped along with all her hopes and dreams. Her family, her husband, her friends and our world lost a future with her. John and Sandy (who has since passed) have used Laura’s story to create change in eating disorder care, and we hope to continue their work here. We will support families and empower caregivers to fight eating disorders from the front lines. We believe that when an entire family is supported, outcomes for those suffering are better. Our intention is to use Laura’s life, and her legacy to set in motion a ripple effect of hope. Hope that there is a better way, one family at a time.
